FAQ

  • We are a home euthanasia service and are available for quality of life (QOL) consultations, either in the home or via Zoom/phone. We do not provide wellness or sick pet care, emergency care, or surgical services.

We provide end of life services for dogs and cats only. While many other species are well-loved as pets, they often present challenges with sedation and euthanasia protocols that we are not able to accommodate.

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide cremation services for pets that have passed away at home or have been euthanized by another veterinarian.

  • The entire family - Your pet will pass in an environment that is comfortable to them, surrounded by human and furry family members. Home euthanasia is beneficial for all but especially pets who get nervous at the vet or in the car.

Pets that are protective of their home environment and family members, pets who are aggressive towards strangers, and pets who are being euthanized due to aggression may be candidates for home euthanasia with pre-visit sedation on board. This is generally prescribed by your regular vet after speaking to us at Sunset Vet Chattanooga. We may be able to arrange a type of appointment beforehand so that we can prescribe the medication, but that depends on state legality.

  • Appointments are made by request and it is preferred they be made in advance. They are typically scheduled between 9am-5pm on weekdays and 10am-4pm on Saturday when available. We are generally open at least 2 Saturdays a month but appointments must be made in advance. We do not offer same-day appointments on Saturday.

We are closed on Sunday & Wednesday. Work-in or same-day appointments may require an additional fee and are not always available. More urgent appointments would be best served by your family veterinarian or one of our local emergency clinics.

  • Areas most commonly served include Hixson, Red Bank, East Ridge, Soddy Daisy, Ooltewah, East Brainerd, Lookout Mountain, Southside, Downtown, Harrison, Middle Valley, Signal Mountain, Fort Oglethorpe, and Ringgold.

This is not a comprehensive list. Please check to see if your home is in our service area by looking at the map here.

  • Euthanasia packages start at $380 for clients who choose to bury their pet at home but cost depends on several factors including travel time, the size of your pet, and aftercare wishes (i.e. cremation packages are more expensive). We are happy to provide a detailed estimate once we have received more information from you.

Telemedicine (via phone or Zoom) quality of life consults are $60. QOL consultations at your home are $170 but there may be additional fees depending on travel time.

  • Accepted payment forms include Venmo, PayPal, major credit cards, checks, and cash. We are unable to accept Care Credit or do payment plans.

  • You can call or text us at 423-815-9494. You can request an appointment online by clicking our “Schedule an Appointment” button and we will get back to you ASAP.

  • Euthanasia is a difficult decision and sometimes things happen unexpectedly. Generally, 24 hours’ notice for an appointment is enough. Occasionally same-day appointments are available but they are not guaranteed, especially if you need a specific time (i.e. evening appointments tend to be booked first).

While we of course want to have as much time with our pets as possible, planning for a home euthanasia sometimes means the decision needs to be made sooner (even if by a day) rather than waiting.

  • We understand that circumstances change and never want anyone to feel like they are being pushed to say goodbye to their beloved pet before they’re ready.

You may cancel your appointment at any time. However, we do charge a $50 fee for cancellations within 2 hours of the appointment time. No cancellation fee is charged if your pet passes before the appointment.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule so that we can make that time available for another family.

  • If your pet passes on his/her own, keep him/her in a cool location with towels or puppy pads underneath in case of any fluid release. We are only able to offer cremation services for pets we have euthanized so you will need to contact one of our local crematoriums, your veterinarian, or one of the emergency clinics and transport your pet for aftercare.

  • Masks are not required at this time. However, Dr. Tapp is more than happy to wear one if needed. Just let her know.

If members of your household have recently been diagnosed with or have symptoms of COVID-19 or another contagious respiratory illness, we will need to reschedule the appointment.

Community levels are checked regularly to see if recommendations have changed and will be updated accordingly.
